Criccieth Castle stands just outside the sea town of Criccieth. The walls and towers of the castle are in ruins, however the gatehouse still helps keeps the imposing castle. The spectacular views from the castle over the surrounding coastline emphases the strategic position it had.

It is only a short distance walk on the coastal headland from Criccieth town centre

Gwydir Castle

gwydir.jpg

Gwydir lies on the edge of the flood plain of the river Conwy, this flood plain would provide fertile farm land in the Conwy valley (Nantconwy). This fertile plain has been bitterly contested for many hundreds of years. The castle formed an important manorial centre for the local area and through the ages has sustained multiple attacks by local bandits.
In the 14th century the castle belonged to Hywel Coetmore, who commanded a force of bowmen for the Black Prince. It is most likely for this action that during the war of the Roses the castle was destroyed as an act of retribution.

The castle is now in private hands and is open to the public daily from March to October.
