William Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway in 1582, her family home was in the hamlet of Shottery barely a mile from the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon.
The Hathaway home, was actually a substantial twelve roomed Elizabethan farmhouse, the lower part was built in the early 1460’s and subsequently extended in about 1623. The cottage remained in the Hathaway family until 1892, when it was bought along with some furnishings by the Birthplace Trust, who restored it to its original character.
