Gwydir Castle
![]()
Gwydir lies on the edge of the flood plain of the river Conwy, this flood plain would provide fertile farm land in the Conwy valley (Nantconwy). This fertile plain has been bitterly contested for many hundreds of years. The castle formed an important manorial centre for the local area and through the ages has sustained multiple attacks by local bandits.
In the 14th century the castle belonged to Hywel Coetmore, who commanded a force of bowmen for the Black Prince. It is most likely for this action that during the war of the Roses the castle was destroyed as an act of retribution.
The castle is now in private hands and is open to the public daily from March to October.
